Rules for posting comments
3:29pm, 12th October 2003
Here are the rules if you want to post comments to any of the pages on this site. Nothing to worry about if you’re sensible.
Filling in the form
- You don’t have to give a real name, but put something.
- You don’t have to give a URL, but it would be useful. Don’t you want a free link?
- No HTML. All tags will be spayed.
- URLs will be auto-linked.
- Linebreaks mark the end of paragraphs.
Moderation
Trying to turn the world into a discrete formal system is the fallacy of the Victorians, jurisprudes, authoritarians and bad guys in general. I won’t try it here, so be warned that every point below may or may not have exceptions.
- I have the final word on which comments will be allowed, but there is very little I will delete. Your freedom of speech is x% effective here, where x is very close, but not quite equal, to 100.
- Comments must be an honest attempt at being interesting or entertaining. You can cuss until your nose bleeds, as long as it’s extropic. Be careful though: swearing done wrong is an easy way to turn a reasonable post into a rubbish one.
- Duplicate comments will be deleted.
- Stupid comments may be kept for amusement’s sake, but may also be deleted.
- Spammers will be hunted down and crucified. There’s a copy of nmap and a box of nails waiting for anyone who thinks I’m joking.

What time is this? Its 22:38 GMT time according to euro.time.apple.com, so what time are these comments running on? James Time? :) And what, no decimal expression of James Time?
08:25 eh? Pfff ;p
Zhaoyang time. I suppose I could shift it forward 2 hours, but it’s not been high on the todo list :)
OK, time corrected. Zhaoyang is an hour and fifteen minutes slow.
The NTP server was set to time.euro.apple.com but it wasnt using it and I hadnt noticed lol. My incompetence, carved on the web and googleranked highly! *sob* Lets see if its more accurate now.
Of course, your time correction kludge makes it still wrong, oops. Also, the ‘Refresh:’ works, but needs some kind of ‘Browsers, dont refresh from cache’ flag because I dont see my post unless I manually refresh, and some luser might post twice ;p
Oh, and there’s one more thing…
One day, a kid, or a crazy wild-eyed scientist who claims to be a scientist, is gonna
come around asking about about having each comment given an uid (if they dont already?) and pouring that into a XHTML #id, so the Refresh: header gives a james.lab6.com/1234/56/78/blog/#uid style URL so that they see their post when the post it, and delay universal entropy that little longer.
I will investigate “Pragma: no-cache”.
And yes, comments do have a uid. I forgot to actually use it!
I’m busy though; don’t expect me to work on any of this until at least next weekend :)
Oh yes…
> delay universal entropy that little longer
Brush up on your second law of thermodynamics! Closed systems necessarily wind down, but any sufficiently small subset of the universe can achieve (almost) arbitrarily high levels of order, as long as you’re willing to burn up everything else.
(I am :)
Goddam it Ted was right. You and your mathhead friends are going to kill us all!
